Multi Grammy Award-winning and Golden Globe nominated singer and songwriter Chris Cornell, is the frontman of three multi platinum bands and the chief architect of the grunge movement.  He has written music for many films, including the Bond franchise’s Casino Royale, and Cornell’s music has been featured prominently in film, TV and video games.

Determined to rediscover himself as a songwriter and singer, in 2009 he embarked on a series of critically acclaimed solo acoustic shows around the world featuring stripped-down versions of songs from his entire career. The tremendous response from critics and sold-out audiences inspired Cornell and gave him the impetus to compose the boldly intimate music heard on HIGHER TRUTH. “I really wanted to create something for all the people that supported me on my acoustic tour…it’s sort of a love letter to them.”

Everybody knows that Chris Cornell, with his extraordinary four-octave voice, can bring the thunder, but on HIGHER TRUTH, his game-changing fifth album as a solo artist, the singer/songwriter demonstrates he can also summon a soft summer rain, and much more. An acoustic song cycle filled with subtle pastoral beauty and wistful melancholy, Cornell presents a whole new side of his artistry—one that equals the range of his formidable pipes.

Inspired by the stark arrangements of musicians like Nick Drake, Daniel Johnston and White Album-era Beatles, Cornell creates a musical universe unlike anything he has done before. Songs like the impossibly catchy “Dead Wishes” and the mandolin-driven “Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart” are effortless in their melodic splendor, and their tasteful arrangements reveal a new sophistication.

“For the last several years I opened myself up to many different collaborations, and I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. But somewhere during that period I started feeling like it would be really refreshing to try to do something that was 100% of my own creation and wouldn’t be influenced by someone else’s expectations.  HIGHER TRUTH is born entirely of me, and what I do,” says Cornell. “The album title may sound pretentious or self-aggrandizing, but  the idea of a ‘higher truth’ is very grounded.  I kept thinking about the purity of one of my babies looking up at me while I’m shaking some keys and being reminded of the beauty of life at that moment. There is no corruption or vanity or self-consciousness. That’s what that phrase “higher truth” means to me—that natural state. And I felt all the songs really lived in that world in a way that was good.”

While Cornell’s solo tour was his motivation, the roots of HIGHER TRUTH can traced back even further to the late Nineties when country legend Johnny Cash covered Cornell’s epic “Rusty Cage,” a song written for his band, Soundgarden. “I started getting phone messages from people saying how great the lyrics were,” he recalls.  “This was a couple years after Soundgarden recorded it and no one ever once told me how great the lyrics were. I sort of scratched my head, but I decided it wasn’t just the delivery—it was what it was surrounded by.

“Then I had sort of the opposite experience when I arranged and performed Michael Jackson’s ‘Billie Jean’ for my acoustic tour. People told me they didn’t realize how heavy and dramatic the lyrics were until they heard my acoustic version. Those two things stuck with me. That made me realize there was another element of singing and songwriting that was powerful and worth investigating. And that my voice can do something that is extremely intimate, but I hadn’t really explored that—certainly not in record making. To write an album to support that was the essence of the plan.”

In keeping with the personal nature of the music, instead of forming a band, he enlisted producer/multi-instrumentalist Brendan O’Brien (Neil Young, Pearl Jam) to work with him. Together they performed most of the music heard on the album. The minimal, but sublime, arrangements were based on what Cornell calls a gut feeling on “what seemed just necessary.” While the songwriter’s acoustic guitar is central, tasteful dashes of strings, horns and electric instruments keep the adventure lively and engrossing.

“If I gave myself a rule on HIGHER TRUTH, it was that these songs needed to move and be compelling from beginning to the end, even if, technically, very little was going on,” says Cornell. “There was no way to cheat it.”
