The Peoria Civic Center, the Peoria Area Convention and Visitors Bureau are pleased to announce the 2019 Upper Great Lakes Regional Figure Skating Championship, hosted by Heart of Illinois Figure Skating Club (HOISC). The competition will take place October 3-7, 2018 inside Carver Arena and the Owens Center.
The event will feature approximately 600 competitors from Illinois, Iowa, Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, with an additional 4,000 spectators throughout the course of the competition weekend. Competition will take place on Carver Arena ice inside the Peoria Civic Center. The Owens Center and the Pekin Memorial Ice Arena will also be utilized for additional practice and competition ice.
The Peoria Area Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates over 1,000 hotel room nights with over $750,000 in estimated economic impact generated for the Peoria Area. “This is a fantastic example of communities and hoteliers working together to showcase the Peoria Area’s characteristic hospitality to hundreds of athletes and their families from around the region,” says Don Welch, President and CEO of the Peoria Area CVB.
“The Heart of Illinois Skating Club is proud to be hosting the 2019 Upper Great Lakes Regional Figure Skating Championships,” said Amy Barney, former club president and event chair. “As a small organization, we have looked for ways to promote figure skating in our community and were thrilled when the U.S. Figure Skating accepted our bid to host this year. The support that we have received from the Civic Center and the City of Peoria has been overwhelmingly positive and we look forward to a great competition. We are excited to share our love of this sport with the City of Peoria and the surrounding areas and are excited to share our wonderful city with the figure skaters, their families, coaches, officials, and fans from all over the Midwest.”
The road to the U.S. Figure Skating Championships each year, and to the Olympic Winter Games every four years, begins with the U.S. Figure Skating qualifying structure of regional and sectional events. The structure consists of nine regional events and three sectional events (see chart below for clarification). Skaters who place in the top four at a regional competition qualify for either sectional championship(novice, junior and senior) or the U.S. Junior Figure Skating Championships (juvenile and intermediate); skaters who place in the top four at a sectional qualify for the U.S. Championships.
“This is a unique new event that provides additional usage opportunity to the ice inside Carver Arena,” said Rik Edgar, General Manager of the Peoria Civic Center. “We encourage the local community to join us downtown and witness first-hand the Midwest’s best figure skaters as they compete for their spot at Sectionals and Nationals.”
All event passes are $35 and are available for pre-sale at https://hoisc.wufoo.com/forms/2019-ugl-regionals-additional-orders/ Single day passes will be available for $15 per day the day of competition.
